Inventory accounting //
Inventory accounting that matches your warehouse
Your gross margin depends on what happens at purchasing, receiving, landing, and shipping.
Fiskal ties each step to the ledger, so the number on your income statement matches what moved through your warehouse.

02 // The reality gap
The books balance. The margins still look off.
Every inventory business has a gap. It sits between what your inventory platform shows and what your financial reports say. We call it the Customer Reality Gap.
Most owners find it the same way. Two systems, two numbers, and nobody sure which one to believe.
What the platform shows
What the report says
Same stock. Two numbers. Which one do you believe?
“We fix COGS manually every month.”
What is actually happening
A manual journal closes the gap on the report. The cause stays in place, and the drift continues underneath it.
The fixAudit
“Our margins look off, so pricing must be wrong.”
What is actually happening
A margin that does not make sense is rarely a pricing issue. It is usually a landed cost sitting in expenses instead of inventory.
The fixAlign
“QuickBooks says one thing. Cin7 says another.”
What is actually happening
This is rarely a data entry mistake. It usually comes from a workflow that does not match the system, a timing delay, or a connector setting.
The fixAlign
“The sync is working.”
What is actually happening
The sync may be working, but the mapping logic may be wrong. Data can move every night and still land in the wrong account.
The fixAlign
“Our accountant will sort it out.”
What is actually happening
Accountants adjust outcomes. Fixing what the system sends takes someone who also understands how the system is configured.

03 // What is happening inside the system
Where COGS drifts in a Cin7 Core setup
Cin7 Core costs each sale from the purchase cost of the stock that was picked, using a method such as FIFO or FEFO. That is sound design. It also means every upstream mistake travels all the way to gross margin. These are the places we find it.
Landed cost leak.
Freight, duties, customs, brokerage, and fulfillment charges need to attach to the units they brought in. Cin7 Core allocates them by cost, quantity, weight, or volume. Pick the wrong basis, or code the bill to expenses, and unit cost is wrong from the first sale.
Timing gap.
COGS posts when the shipment is authorized. A landed cost added after the sale ships creates a second COGS journal, dated when that cost was authorized. The earlier period keeps the margin it already reported.
Manual journal distortion.
Cin7 Core avoids rewriting historical COGS. A manual journal or a late cost event creates an additional transaction instead. Every adjustment adds a layer someone has to explain later.
Beginning Balance Ghost.
A reconciliation difference is rarely a reconciliation issue. It is usually a Beginning Balance that shifted because a prior reconciled transaction was changed or deleted.
Inventory state drift.
Stock takes and adjustments in the warehouse reach the ledger as adjustments. When counts, receipts, and bills disagree about what state a unit is in, valuation and the warehouse stop describing the same inventory.
Assembly cost splits.
When Disassembly Cost % is blank on a bill of materials, Cin7 Core splits the cost of the disassembled item equally across its components. Components rarely cost the same.
Ghost adjustments.
Amazon FBA separates available stock from internal transfers between fulfillment centers. In a poorly configured integration, Cin7 reads a transfer as missing stock. It posts a negative adjustment and can freeze backorders. The fix is workflow design. For example, capture orders at Fully Shipped instead of On Paid.
Three way match gaps.
A purchase order, a goods receipt, and a vendor bill describe one purchase. If they disagree, the ledger records a version of the purchase the warehouse never saw. Fiskal manages the full purchase order lifecycle in Cin7, matching POs, goods receipts (GRNI), and vendor bills before anything syncs to your accounting software.
04 // Operational cause, financial consequence
What happens on the floor shows up in the ledger
- A freight bill is coded to expenses at receiptInventory is valued below what the goods cost to land, and gross margin reads higher than it should
- A landed cost is entered after the sale shipsA second COGS entry posts in a later period, so margin moves after the period was reported
- A shipment is authorized in a different month from its invoiceRevenue and cost land in different periods, and margin is off in both
- A stock take finds shrinkageThe loss reaches COGS as an adjustment, and a receiving problem looks like a margin problem
Operators see the floor. Accountants see the ledger. Fiskal reads both.
05 // Strategic impact
Every decision leans on this number
Pricing leans on gross margin. Purchasing leans on inventory value and cost per unit. Cash planning leans on both. Inventory accuracy drives financial accuracy, from COGS and gross margin to the inventory asset on your balance sheet and your taxable income.
When COGS drifts, each of those decisions carries a quiet error. The error gets bigger as volume grows.
You do not need more reports. You need source data you can trust, so the reports you already have start telling the truth.
06 // What Fiskal does
Bookkeeping records. Inventory accounting traces.
A generalist bookkeeper records transactions after the fact. That is a useful job. It is also a different job. Inventory accounting needs someone who understands warehouse workflows, EDI, multichannel syncing, and how the inventory software makes its decisions.
At Fiskal, the Cin7 systems team and the inventory accounting team sit together. Stock data and the general ledger do not get the chance to drift apart. Cin7 is configured to be a system of record your finance team can close the books on.
Audit, align, govern
Audit.
We trace the gap between gross margin and reality back through the shipment, the landed cost, the receipt, and the purchase order, until we find where the drift starts. We fix the cause. We do not patch the symptom with a journal every month end.
Align.
We set the costing method, the landed cost allocation basis, and the account mapping between Cin7 and QuickBooks Online or Xero. Freight, duties, customs, and fulfillment charges are capitalized into inventory cost, not expensed to overhead. Operations and the ledger then describe the same inventory.
Govern.
We write the policies that keep it from drifting again: manual journals, retroactive changes, period close, and stock count adjustments. Systems drift after go live because nobody owns the discipline. We do.
Fiskal works in phases: Stabilize, Implement and Integrate, then Ongoing Services. We do not advance until the data in the current phase is sound. During a cleanup or an implementation, that means the inventory numbers reconcile completely before we touch the next integration.
Clean inventory and COGS data is also what makes Bookkeeping, Controlling, and Business Intelligence worth paying for.

Deliberate on purpose

Lowtemp Industries
Lowtemp Industries started with a Cin7 Stabilization Sprint. Essential Finance Operations followed, and Purchasing and Inventory Operations after that. The order is not an accident. Fiskal does not advance a phase until the data in the current one is sound.
Fiskal was named Cin7 Accounting Partner of the Year in 2025 and 2026.
“Working with Fiskal has been extremely deliberate and structured.”
08 // 5 questions
Frequently asked questions
Does Cin7 Core use average cost for COGS?
It costs each sale from the purchase cost of the stock picked, using a method such as FIFO or FEFO.
How does Cin7 Core allocate landed costs?
By cost, quantity, weight, or volume. The basis you choose sets the unit cost of the stock. A wrong basis, or a bill coded to expenses, makes unit cost wrong from the first sale.
What happens if a landed cost arrives after the sale ships?
Cin7 Core creates a second COGS journal, dated when that cost was authorized. The earlier period keeps the margin it already reported.
Why does QuickBooks show one number and Cin7 another?
Usually a workflow, timing, or connector setting problem, not a data entry error. The cause sits in how the two systems are configured to talk to each other.
What is landed cost capitalization?
It means freight, duties, customs, and fulfillment charges are added to the cost of the inventory they brought in. They are not expensed right away to overhead. Product margins stay accurate when the goods sell.
