Shopify POS sales that match your Cin7 inventory and your books
Every store sale touches stock, tax, cash, and margin. Fiskal configures the Cin7 and Shopify POS connection so inventory businesses see one set of numbers.
For U.S. inventory businesses selling in stores and online, using Cin7 Core with QuickBooks Online or Xero.
01 // The reality gap
The sync shows green. The numbers still do not match.
Sales are reaching Cin7, so the integration works.
Sales are reaching Cin7 in whatever shape your settings allow. Location, payment, tax, and timing settings decide where each sale ends up.
Your registers are busy. Orders appear in Cin7. Nothing is throwing an error.
Then month end arrives. The store count disagrees with the shelf. The daily sales total does not match the deposit. Your accountant adjusts journals again.
That is not a glitch. It is configuration.A connection that moves data is not the same as a connection that moves it correctly.
- “The numbers do not match.”
- “We just fix it manually every month.”
- “We do not trust the system.”
02 // What is actually happening
Store sales behave differently from web orders
Cin7 Core treats Shopify POS sales differently from online orders. Several defaults that work for a web store quietly fail at the register.
- Inventory State Drift
Locations decide which shelf loses stock
Each POS sale carries a store location. Cin7 uses a mapping table to link each Shopify POS location to a Cin7 location, and that table controls stock updates. Skip it and Shopify calculates availability from your default online location, not from the store.
The sale arrives already finished
A POS order shows up in Cin7 after the customer has left. Cin7 authorizes pick, pack, and ship automatically and reduces stock. Fulfillment status for POS orders lives in Shopify POS settings, and Cin7 does not send fulfillment updates back. No manual step exists to catch a mistake.
Walk in customers need somewhere to go
Every order in Cin7 needs a customer. When a store sale has none, Cin7 uses the default customer from your settings. Billing and shipping details on POS orders are not updated. Without a plan, one placeholder customer collects every anonymous store sale.
- Timing Gap
Payments close invoices only when they are mapped
Cin7 can apply Shopify payments to sale invoices automatically. That only works when each payment method is mapped to an account and the invoice is authorized. Leave the mapping empty and orders still arrive. The invoices stay open until someone adds payments by hand.
- Sync Configuration Failures
Two mappings that stop orders cold
An order with an unmapped tax rule cannot be processed into a sale. An order containing a gift card waits in Pending orders until a gift card liability account is mapped. Both look like sync problems. Both are setup gaps.
- Manual Journal Distortion
Changes at the counter do not travel
If an order is edited in Shopify after Cin7 captures it, Cin7 does not update. Cin7 can only record a change to a completed sale as an exchange: a credit note plus a new sale and invoice. Shopify order edits do not send enough detail to build that. Someone fixes it by hand, or voids and imports the order again.
Refunds restock only if the map is right
Cin7 captures refunds and restocks from Shopify and applies them to the original sale. Automatic restocking needs mapped locations. When it works, Cin7 records the movement with a transfer order from the sale location to the restock location. Without the map, automatic restocking does not work.
Consolidation trades detail for tidiness
Cin7 can combine store sales into one sale every 3, 6, 12, or 24 hours. That keeps accounting entries tidy. Consolidated orders use the default customer, do not import order tags, and do not update fulfillment status in Shopify.
On heavy sale days, Cin7 pauses automatic order capture and stock updates when Shopify API capacity runs low. It then loads pending sales in five minute intervals. Your counts can lag exactly when volume is highest.

Sara Campbell

Fiskal built a Shopify POS data pipeline and implemented Cin7 for Sara Campbell, and supports it today. A Cin7 to BigQuery pipeline sits alongside.
Sara Campbell trades from multiple physical stores. Shopify POS order numbers flow into Cin7, and stock moves between locations through transfers.
04 // Operational cause, financial consequence
What happens at the register shows up in the financials
Every setting above has a financial twin. This is where the register meets the balance sheet.
- Store location or product not mappedInventory on hand drifts from the shelf. Inventory value and cost of goods sold drift with it.
- Payment methods not mappedInvoices stay open in Cin7. Receivables and clearing balances carry sales that are already paid.
- Orders consolidatedOne summary entry per period in QuickBooks Online or Xero. Cleaner books, less customer level detail to trace.
- Discounts brought in as price reductions or as additional chargesRevenue and discount reporting change shape. Margin analysis follows whichever you pick.
- Gift cards without a liability accountGift card sales have no liability account to post to, so the orders stall.
- Refund without restock mappingThe credit note exists. The stock does not return. Inventory and cost of goods sold stay wrong until someone corrects them.
- Payment reference settingTransaction ID suits smaller volumes. Payment ID suits larger ones. The choice decides how easily sales match payouts.
Payouts are their own problem.
Shopify pays you in batches, net of fees. Matching a payout to the sales behind it takes its own structure. Payout tools such as A2X categorize sales, fees, taxes, refunds, and gift cards so they reconcile to the bank deposit, and A2X supports Shopify POS. Fiskal designs how Cin7, the payout layer, and your accounting system divide the work, so no sale is posted twice.
05 // Strategic impact
What this costs when you are making decisions
Store inventory sets your purchasing. If it is wrong, you reorder what you already own or run out of what you sold. Inventory is the largest consumer of cash in an inventory business, so the error is expensive in both directions.
Store margin sets your expansion. If sales, discounts, and returns post unevenly, you cannot compare locations with confidence.
Month end shows the cost most clearly. Every manual journal that corrects a store sale is a signal. The setup needs the fix, not the accountant.
None of this needs alarm. It needs a clear look at how your systems are configured.
06 // What Fiskal does
Audit, align, govern
Fiskal understands both sides of this connection. We know how Cin7 is configured, and we know what each setting does to your books.
Audit
We follow store sales from the register, through Cin7, into QuickBooks Online or Xero. We find where the three disagree and why. The audit covers locations, payments, tax, customers, consolidation, discounts, returns, and gift cards.
Align
We configure what the audit finds. Then we clean historical mismatches, so the corrected setup starts from sound numbers.
Govern
We set controls so the setup stays correct. A new store, a new payment method, or a new tax jurisdiction each get a defined path instead of a guess.
What we configure
- Store location mapping, and products mapped to locations
- Payment methods mapped to accounts
- Tax rules mapped between Shopify and Cin7
- Gift card liability account
- Default customer and company handling
- Order capture timing and consolidation schedule
- Discounts as price reductions or additional charges
- Returns, refunds, and automatic restock
- Payment reference for reconciliation
- Order lock date and exclusion tags, for a clean cutover
Where do you start?
- Already connected, and the numbers drift. We stabilize the current setup first.
- Adding Shopify POS to Cin7. We implement and integrate it correctly the first time.
- Opening stores or changing tax and payment setup. Ongoing services keep every change controlled.
Fiskal does not move to the next phase until the data in the current phase is sound.
Several Shopify stores can link to one Cin7 Core account. Each has its own catalog, logs, and settings.

Shopify POS and Cin7, answered
Does Cin7 Core work with Shopify POS?
Yes. Cin7 Core connects to Shopify, and Shopify POS sales arrive through that connection. Cin7 labels each one as a POS order, so you can tell store sales from web and draft orders.
Does a store sale reduce stock in Cin7?
Yes, once the store location is mapped to a Cin7 location. For POS sales, stock comes out of the fulfillment location. Cin7 can also push updated stock levels back to Shopify when that setting is on.
How are returns at the register handled?
Cin7 captures Shopify refunds and restocks and applies them to the original sale. Automatic restocking requires mapped locations. Cin7 records the movement with a transfer order from the sale location to the restock location.
Can we sell gift cards at the register?
Yes, with a gift card liability account mapped in the Cin7 integration settings. Without it, orders containing gift cards wait in Pending orders.
Should we consolidate store sales into fewer entries?
It depends on volume and how you report. Consolidation groups sales every 3, 6, 12, or 24 hours into one sale, which keeps accounting tidy. It also uses a default customer and does not update fulfillment status in Shopify. We help you choose during the audit.
We edited an order after the sale. Will Cin7 update?
No. Cin7 does not pick up changes made in Shopify after it captures an order. Cin7 can only record a change as an exchange, meaning a credit note plus a new sale. Fixing it means editing the order in Cin7, or voiding it and importing it again.
Does the integration reconcile Shopify payouts to the bank?
Cin7 captures payments against sales. Matching them to Shopify payouts is a separate step. Tools such as A2X are built for that and support Shopify POS. Fiskal designs how Cin7, the payout layer, and QuickBooks Online or Xero fit together.
Do you support other POS systems?
Yes. Fiskal integrates Shopify POS, Square POS, and Cin7 POS with Cin7.
Can we connect several stores?
Yes. Several Shopify stores link to one Cin7 Core account. Each store has its own catalog, logs, and settings. Each also needs an integration connection in your Cin7 plan.
