Furniture inventory management that matches your warehouse and your books
A sofa spends weeks in a container, arrives in two shipments, and the freight invoice lands after the first half has sold. If your system cannot follow that, your margin is a guess. Fiskal sets up Cin7 and the accounting behind it so stock, cost, and cash tell the same story.
For inventory businesses doing $1M to $100M in revenue: manufacturers, importers, wholesalers, and retailers with showrooms.
01 // The reality gap
What you hear in the office, and what the system is doing
Furniture exposes weak setups faster than most categories. The product is heavy, the lead times are long, and the costs arrive in pieces.
- “Our margins look fine.”The cost on the item is the factory price only. Freight, duties, and delivery sit on other invoices, and some of them post to expense and never reach inventory value.
- “The stock count is off.”A purchase order arrived in parts and the receipts were not matched to it line by line. The system holds stock that is still on the water.
- “The integration is broken.”Orders are moving. The variant mapping, tax logic, or SKU naming is wrong, so the right order lands on the wrong item.
- “Our accountant can fix it.”A manual journal in Xero or QuickBooks corrects the ledger. The Cin7 cost layers underneath stay as they were, so the same error returns next month.
02 // What is happening
Six places furniture inventory loses accuracy
Landed cost that arrives after the sale
A furniture item carries a factory price, then ocean freight, duties, and delivery on separate invoices. Those invoices often arrive after the goods are on the floor, and sometimes after the first units have sold. In Cin7 Core, a freight or duty invoice allocated after a sale does not correct that sale. It posts a separate adjustment in the current period. Margin moves in a month when nothing moved in the warehouse.
Purchase orders that arrive in pieces
A large order from an overseas factory can split across containers that land weeks apart. If receipts are not matched to the purchase order line by line, the system either shows stock that is still on the water or hides stock that is on the dock. Add a sale that goes out the door before the purchase invoice is authorized, and Cin7 takes cost from the purchase order if it is filled in, then from historical average cost, then from $0.00. Those sales carry a cost that is wrong from day one.
Variants that multiply
One chair can come in several finishes, several fabrics, and left and right configurations. Cin7 handles variants and bundles. The trouble starts with how the matrix is built. Without naming rules and a clear option structure, the same item appears twice, a wholesale order matches the wrong line, and the Shopify listing drifts from the warehouse.
Bulky stock in several places
Furniture takes space, so it sits in several places at once: a warehouse, a showroom floor, a 3PL, and a truck between them. A transfer left open leaves units in limbo. A floor model can be sold twice, once in the store and once online. Location totals stop agreeing with each other and with the books.
Bills of materials that miss the cost
When a bill of materials leaves out labor, overhead, or wastage, finished goods are carried at less than they cost. Every margin downstream is overstated. Cin7 supports bills of materials, assembly, and advanced manufacturing. The setup decides whether work in progress and finished goods reconcile to the books.
Lead times that outrun the reorder point
A reorder rule built for stock that comes back in days fails when restocking takes a season. Forecasting and MRP depend on the cost and stock data underneath them. Where that data is distorted, the system produces inaccurate purchase suggestions, and orders placed on an inflated margin put pressure on cash when the corrections arrive.
03 // Operational cause, financial consequence
Every one of these starts on the floor and ends in a financial statement
Fiskal works on both sides, which is the only way to fix either.
- A container arrives in two parts and receipts are not matched to the purchase orderInventory value and goods received not invoiced balances drift apart.
- A freight invoice is allocated after the goods have soldA margin swing in the current period with no matching stock movement.
- Stock sells before the purchase invoice is authorized and no purchase order cost existsThose sales post at $0.00 cost, and gross margin looks better than it is until a correction lands.
- A transfer to the showroom is never closed outLocation totals disagree with each other and with inventory value on the balance sheet.
- A bill of materials omits labor and overheadFinished goods are carried too low and margin is overstated on every sale.
- A manual journal corrects the ledgerThe Cin7 subledger stays unchanged, so the difference returns.
04 // Strategic impact
What this costs the people making the decisions
Furniture cash goes out months before the sale comes in. That makes every purchase order a bet on a margin you have to trust. When cost is incomplete, the bet is placed blind. Reorders follow the lines that look profitable on paper. The bank balance says one thing, the books say another, and the owner becomes the reconciliation. Decisions slow down because nobody believes the report.
05 // What Fiskal does
Audit first, then align, then govern
We start with the Fiskal Score, a review across people, process, and technology. Then we stabilize, implement and integrate, and move into ongoing services. We do not advance to the next phase until the data in the current one is sound. Same team throughout.
Variant structure and naming rules that carry through every channel
A purchasing and receiving workflow built for split containers and late invoices
Landed cost allocation set up and checked at month end
Bills of materials with labor, overhead, and wastage, tied to the books
Stock across warehouses, showrooms, and 3PLs reconciled to inventory value
Clean sync between Cin7, QuickBooks or Xero, and your channels, including Shopify, wholesale, EDI, and marketplaces
Training for the people who receive, pick, and book
Once the data holds, bookkeeping, controlling, FP&A, and business intelligence sit on top of it. Margin by product line and channel becomes a report you can trust.

08 // Questions
Questions furniture businesses ask
Can Cin7 handle furniture variants such as finish, fabric, and size?
Yes. Cin7 supports variants and bundles for items that come in many combinations of size, material, and finish. The setup decides whether it works. Fiskal builds the option structure and naming rules first, so the same item reads the same way in Cin7, Shopify, and your wholesale price sheets.
How should an importer account for freight and duties on furniture?
As landed cost, allocated to the purchase so the cost sits in inventory value and reaches cost of goods sold when the item sells. Timing matters. In Cin7 Core, a freight or duty invoice allocated after the stock has sold posts as a separate adjustment in the current period. It does not correct the original sale.
Does the setup differ for manufacturers, importers, and retailers?
Yes. Manufacturers need bills of materials with labor, overhead, and wastage, plus work in progress. Importers need landed cost and split receipts. Retailers need showroom, warehouse, and ecommerce stock to agree. Many furniture businesses cross two or three of these models. Fiskal configures for the mix you operate.
Which accounting platforms connect to Cin7?
QuickBooks Online and Xero. The connection itself is the easy part. Account mapping and costing method decide whether the numbers hold.
Our Cin7 is live but the numbers still do not match. Where do we start?
With a Diagnostic Call. We trace the difference to the layer where it entered, before anyone posts another journal.
