Manufacturing accounting that ties back to your production floor
You build the product in Cin7. You close the books in QuickBooks or Xero. For most manufacturers, those two stories do not match.
Fiskal builds the financial operations that make them agree, for inventory businesses from $1M to $100M in revenue.
01 // The reality gap
Your production numbers and your books keep disagreeing
Xero says one thing. Cin7 says another. Someone posts a journal to close the gap. Next month, the gap returns, uninvited.
Most manufacturers read this as a reporting problem, or a sync glitch. The cause sits earlier: in how cost enters Cin7 at purchase, at landed cost allocation, and at the sync between systems.
A journal posted in your accounting platform corrects what the General Ledger shows. It does not touch the cost layers in Cin7 that produce next period’s COGS. So the fix looks right at month end and breaks again after the next close.
02 // What is happening inside Cin7
Where manufacturing costs go wrong in Cin7 Core
Cost errors start in the inventory layer and flow downstream into accounting. A fix made downstream never travels back upstream. These five patterns come from Fiskal diagnostic engagements.
Stock received before the invoice is authorized
Cin7 sets cost layers when the purchase invoice is authorized, not at receipt. Until then, it looks for cost in order: the PO cost if filled out, then historical average cost, then $0.00. A sale processed in that window inherits the result.
Freight and duty that arrive late
A freight or customs invoice allocated after the stock has sold does not reopen the original period. Cin7 posts a separate adjustment in the current period. Your margin moves, and nothing in this month’s activity explains it.
A costing method changed mid stream
Change a product’s costing method while an old transaction is still open, such as an unapplied payment on a prior bill, and costing and sync errors follow until that history is resolved.
Disassembly with default splits
Disassemble a kit or assembly without a custom Disassembly Cost percentage on the BOM, and Cin7 divides the parent cost equally across components. It ignores quantities. A low value packaging component takes the same cost as a high value part.
A cost fix on the product card
The Average Cost field is a display number. Editing it changes no cost layer, no journal, and nothing in the P&L.
Planning inherits all of this. MRP and reorder logic consume whatever cost data the system holds. Understated costs can inflate suggested reorder quantities. Overstated costs can lead to under ordering.
03 // Operational cause, financial consequence
What happens in the workflow, and what shows up in the financials
- Components received before the purchase invoice is authorizedCost falls back to the PO, then historical average, then $0.00. Gross margin looks stronger than it is, then corrects in a later period.
- Freight or duty allocated after the saleAn adjustment posts in the current period. Margin shifts with no matching activity.
- Raw materials, work in process (WIP), and finished goods share one inventory accountYou cannot see the value sitting at each stage of production.
- Contract manufacturing and logistics costs sit outside the systemProduct level profitability reflects partial cost. SKU margins mislead.
- A manual journal closes a gap in QuickBooks or XeroThe Inventory Asset balance and Cin7’s Inventory Movement Summary drift further apart with each sync.
04 // Strategic impact
What this costs you as the owner
You buy materials against a margin that looks healthier than it is. Later, a catch up entry lands and the margin drops. The cash has already left.
Every decision about what to buy and what to make rests on cost. When cost is unreliable, each decision carries risk you cannot see.
The aim is simple: you read the P&L and trust it.
05 // What Fiskal does
How Fiskal fixes manufacturing financials in Cin7
Fiskal does not start by adjusting entries. It starts by tracing each variance to the layer where it began.
Audit
Fiskal pulls the Transactions vs Stock on Hand Difference Report in Cin7 Core and traces each variance to its source document: a purchase receipt, a landed cost allocation, or a sync setting. The layer decides the fix. Fiskal also compares the Inventory Movement Summary against your Inventory Asset accounts in QuickBooks Online or Xero.
Align
Fiskal sets up Cin7 so production costs reach your books intact:
- Bills of materials with labor, overhead, and wastage included
- Multiple levels of assemblies, with WIP tracking
- Work orders, BOM components, and production steps, in house or with contract manufacturers
- Landed and contract manufacturing costs captured in the system
- A chart of accounts that separates raw materials, WIP, and finished goods, with COGS broken out by product line
Govern
Systems drift after go live because nobody owns the discipline. Fiskal builds a monthly review that catches late cost adjustments before they surface as unexplained margin. It checks your sync screens for failed, pending, and skipped items. It sets policies for retroactive changes and manual journals. For planning, Fiskal designs your forecasting and MRP process so purchase orders follow forecasts and BOM requirements. MRP is an add on module in Cin7 Core.
Fiskal works in order: stabilize, then implement and integrate, then manage the numbers. The next phase does not start until the data in the current one is sound. The end state is a Financial Operating System, with production, inventory, accounting, and reporting connected and in agreement.
Manufacturers on Cin7 Core, or planning a move to it, with QuickBooks Online or Xero for accounting. Production in house, with contract manufacturers, or both.

08 // Questions
Questions manufacturers ask
Does Cin7 Core handle manufacturing?
Yes. It supports bills of materials and an Advanced Manufacturing module with work centers and shop floors. MRP is available as an add on module.
Why do my production costs differ between Cin7 and QuickBooks or Xero?
Cost is set in the inventory layer and passed to accounting through the integration. A late invoice, a late landed cost, or a costing method change creates a gap. A manual journal hides the gap and leaves the cause.
Will editing the Average Cost field fix a wrong cost?
No. It is a display number. The fix goes to the source documents where the cost layer was set.
Are labor and overhead part of cost in Cin7?
They are when the BOM is built to include them. Fiskal sets up BOMs with labor, overhead, and wastage, so production cost reaches the P&L complete.
Do we need a bigger ERP?
Not by default. The diagnostic shows whether the problem is the platform or the setup. Davids operates on a right sized stack with Fiskal’s fractional team instead of a heavyweight ERP.
